Vehicle Hijack Prevention Tips

Due to the improvement in vehicle security technology, it has become almost impossible for criminals to steal vehicles, resulting in a huge increase in vehicle hijacking.Hijacking is a organised business, with orders being placed by syndicates for specific vehicles.

Days of the week that hijacking’s occur:

  • Although hijackings occur on every day of the week, Tuesdays and Fridays are when the most vehicles are hijacked.

Times of the day that most hijackings occur:

  • Most vehicles are hijacked between the hours of 04H00-08H00 in the morning and between 16H00-20H00 at night.
Modus Operandi

  • Most hijackings take place in the driveways of residential areas. They prefer areas with easy escape routes.
  • Hijackings take place while you are stopped at traffic lights and intersections or if you pull off on the side of the road to answer your phone.
  • Always be aware of what is going on around you as hijackers will make use of any opportunity they can to take your vehicle if it has been targeted.

How To Prevent Hijackings

  • Ensure that all your vehicle’s doors are always locked and that windows are closed.
  • Get to know your surroundings, as well as the people in the vicinity of your home or workplace and take note of strangers. If you see a stranger walking around at odd times, be careful and rather inform your security company.
  • Be aware of anything out of the ordinary
  • Hijackers plan their attack most of the time. Be sure to use an alternate  route from time to time.
  • Ensure that your car mirrors are adjusted to provide you with the  best all round view of your immediate surroundings
  •  Try to stop at least five meters behind the vehicle in front of you at an intersection with a stop sign or traffic light. This will give you a better chance to escape in a  time of crisis
  • If a stranger approaches you, push your hooter to attract as much attention as possible.
  • Always be on the lookout for suspicious looking vehicles and people. Do not hesitate to report them to the police.
  • Know your routes and the  closest way to the police station. If you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station.
  • Avoid driving through high crime or unfamiliar areas
  • Avoid driving late at night or early in the morning when possible.
  • When returning home after dark, ensure that you stop in a well-lit area or have someone meet you outside, and ensure that you were not followed.
  • When approaching your driveway, be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles or people.
