Urgent Care Northriding opens its doors

Intercare continues to bring the fast-paced global evolution of health care to South Africa with the launch of its new Urgent Care facility in Northriding.

Things happen. Illness or injury strike out of the blue, often at the very worst of times. You come home late from work with an intense migraine. Your child falls off the jungle gym at school and hurts his arm. Or your newborn spikes a fever on a Saturday afternoon. When these situations occur, we’re often faced with uncertainty about where to go for care, especially if the symptoms seem severe and our regular doctor’s rooms are closed.

Following the world-wide trend of providing communities with easy access to high quality healthcare when they need it most, the first standalone Intercare Urgent Care facility will open its doors in Northriding on the 3rd of November 2016. Intercare Northriding will fill the gap between the normal doctor’s rooms and traditional hospital-based emergency rooms by offering walk-in care, longer operating hours and the immediate treatment of acute illnesses or injuries – those that can’t wait until the next day.

Patients of all ages can see a provider without an appointment, just as you would at an ER. Unlike an ER however, Intercare Northriding is specifically designed to be efficient and cost-effective for patients, saving them time and money. A recent study found that nearly 50 percent of the diagnoses at emergency rooms could be treated by Urgent Care centres. Waiting times are shorter and the centres are often closer to communities, making them more accessible and convenient for the busy modern family.

Staffed by doctors and nurses, Intercare Northriding is able to treat and manage a wide range of medical conditions including, but not restricted to, asthma, minor injuries, stings, bites or allergic reactions, infections, vomiting, diarrhoea or dehydration, fever, headache and migraine, most lacerations, colds and flu, suturing and casting, back and neck pain, as well as abdominal pain. Capabilities also extend to IV rehydration and treatment as well as brief annual medical check-ups.

One of the other highlights of Intercare Northriding is its onsite pathology and X-ray services and the facility is fully wheelchair friendly.

Convenience is maximized through both the facilities location, as well as its extended operating hours. The centre has a fully-fledged pharmacy, safe and secure parking (with camera surveillance and centre security), as well as restaurants and coffee shops. Operating hours during the week are Monday to Friday from 07h00 to 21h00 and on weekends and public holidays from 09h00 to 21h00.

“Research has found that among patients who visited emergency rooms but were not admitted to the hospital, 48 percent went there because their doctor’s rooms were not open. Many people use the ER as a place to receive after-hours care for minor illnesses or injuries without realising they have another option,” explains Dr Hendrik Hanekom, Chief Executive of Intercare. “The face of healthcare is changing rapidly and so is the mind-set of the communities we serve. The fact that Intercare Urgent Care Northriding is staffed by doctors and nurses who see and treat patients, allows for greater access to healthcare for the public, meaning they are able to see you when your own doctor can’t.”
